How are piezoelectric ceramics made? For a typical bulk PZT component, controlled oxide powders are prepared, formed, sintered, finished to dimension, electroded, electrically poled and tested. The exact route depends on the material and part geometry. Poling aligns ferroelectric domains so the finished ceramic can convert electrical and mechanical energy. For an OEM buyer, the useful question is not just which steps a factory performs, but which material, dimensions, electrode pattern and measured properties the delivered part must meet.

This 80-second factory overview shows powder pressing, sintering, silver electrode printing, polarization, connection soldering and electrical testing. Dimensional grinding and other intermediate controls described below are not shown in the film. The footage illustrates the sequence; it is not a substitute for the material specification or acceptance test for your project.

Why is piezoelectric ceramic more than a shaped piece of PZT?

Piezoelectric ceramic is a polycrystalline material whose formulation and processing determine its electrical and mechanical behavior. PZT, lead zirconate titanate, is a widely used family, but a formulation label alone does not define the properties of a finished ring or disc. Dimensions, density, electrodes, polarization and test conditions also matter. Lin Shuyu's Principles and Design of Ultrasonic Transducers explains this process chain in §2.1.1.2; the explanation here is independently written for component selection and does not reproduce the book's process parameters.

The CeramTec manufacturing overview and PI's PZT processing tutorial describe comparable industry routes. Their temperatures and electric-field values are supplier- and material-specific; they are not SONER specifications.

What are the main manufacturing stages?

Powder preparation → forming → sintering → dimensional finishing → electrodes → poling → final measurement. These are functional stages, not a universal fixed recipe. Particular products may use intermediate calcination, binder removal, lapping, coating or other treatments.

1. Prepare and form the ceramic

Raw materials are weighed and mixed for the intended composition, then processed into powder suitable for forming. Pressing produces the initial disc, ring or other shape. Powder condition and forming consistency influence the dimensions and density that later processing can achieve. The buyer should specify the final geometry and tolerances, not assume the green compact has final dimensions.

2. Sinter and finish to size

During sintering, the formed body densifies and shrinks. A controlled firing schedule matters because microstructure and dimensional variation affect subsequent performance. Grinding or lapping then brings the component to its specified thickness, diameter and surface condition. These dimensions influence capacitance and resonance in the final design; a material grade cannot compensate for an out-of-tolerance part.

3. Apply electrodes and polarize

Electrodes create the electrical contact needed for poling and later operation. Their material, coverage, contact method and adhesion should match the part drawing and assembly route. SONER's electrode-quality guide addresses this related design decision.

Before poling, the ferroelectric domains in a typical bulk ceramic do not produce a useful aligned macroscopic response. An applied DC electric field creates a preferred polarization direction. The APC piezoelectricity explanation describes how a poled element produces an electrical response to force and mechanical motion when electrically driven. Field, temperature and time must be chosen for the actual material and geometry; no single published setting should be copied into a purchase specification.

4. Measure the finished component

Final inspection can include dimensions, electrode condition, capacitance, dielectric loss, resonance and impedance, and application-specific piezoelectric parameters. The test fixture, frequency, temperature and acceptance limits should be agreed for the quoted part. If the ceramic will be clamped into an ultrasonic transducer, validate the assembled stack and operating load as well as the loose ceramic.

What should an OEM buyer specify before requesting samples?

  • Application and motion: cleaning, sensing, actuation or another use; intended vibration mode and working medium.
  • Material: preferred grade or the required electrical, mechanical and thermal properties.
  • Geometry: outer/inner diameter, thickness, flatness and tolerance, supported by a drawing or reference sample.
  • Electrodes: face pattern, contact area, insulation margin, polarity and connection process.
  • Measurements: capacitance, loss, resonance/impedance and any agreed coefficient, each with test conditions and acceptable variation.
  • Integration: mounting, preload or bonding, drive conditions, temperature, duty cycle, sample quantity and expected production volume.

For ring designs, begin with the ring ceramic product; for flat elements, review the disc ceramic product. SONER's production equipment page shows its ceramic processing and related ultrasonic manufacturing stages. Confirm the proposed material, tolerances and test plan for the actual project rather than inferring them from a catalogue photo.

Frequently asked questions

Does sintering alone make PZT piezoelectric?

Not in the useful aligned sense required for most bulk ceramic devices. Sintering establishes the ceramic body; electrical poling creates the preferred domain orientation. The final response must then be measured.

Can the same ceramic grade be used for every ultrasonic transducer?

No. Material selection depends on the application, vibration mode, drive, load, geometry and thermal conditions. Compare measured properties in the intended assembly rather than relying on a generic grade name.

What information speeds up a custom ceramic quotation?

Send the application, drawing or sample, preferred material if known, electrode layout, target electrical/resonance values, operating conditions, test method and expected quantity.
